Biathlon-In-A-Box v 7.0.5 Navigation Links Electronic Target System Integration Product Description Biathlon-in-a-Box (BIAB) is a software application for use in conducting summer and winter Biathlon competitions that is available for both the Windows and the Macintosh operating systems. Biathlon-in-a-Box will set up competitions, accept competition data from either electronic or manual input, compute the results and print them, and do much, much more. It contains just about everything that you need to conduct a Biathlon competition except a range, ski trails, competitors and a stopwatch. Biathlon-in-a-Box will now work with the Zone4 On-Line Event Registration System. While Biathlon-in-a-Box was developed by Biathlon Ontario to meet the needs of its member biathlon clubs, the software has been steadily gaining acceptance as a very valuable tool to help run good biathlon competitions. Biathlon Canada supports the use of Biathlon-in-a-Box, and recommends it to all its Divisions. Description of the Features of Biathlon-in-a-Box The following links to 'screen shots' show you samples of the Biathlon-in-a-Box working environment (after you have viewed the screen shot, use the 'Back' button on your browser to return to this window): The Main Interface for Selecting Functions of the Application Define the Parameters of your Competition Enter Competitors in Competitions Set the Agenda for a Competition Day Conduct the Draw for the Competition(s) Enter Data During the Competition Monitor Data Collected Electronically from the Timer Sample of Printed Output Produced by Biathlon-in-a-Box
Biathlon-in-a-Box is available on a licensing basis to individuals and to organizations. The following organizations have licensed Biathlon-in-a-Box (up through v5.1.4 unless otherwise noted) for themselves and their subordinate organizations:
For licensing terms and costs contact the author, Graham Lindsay. (Please note that updates for BIAB are free, except that, due to the cost of licensing other shareware that is essential to obtain electronic timer data, there is a fee for existing licensees of older versions of BIAB to upgrade to V6 and later.) Download Biathlon-in-a-Box The Current Version is v7.0.5 (What's New in this version?) BIAB incorporates, within its feature set, integrated documentation. Each screen contains, either directly in text upon the screen or in ToolTips that appear when the mouse pointer hovers over an object, explanations of the data fields, and how they relate to the competition and the generation of results. For those who like to read more, the paper-based documentation of v4.2.2 of BIAB is available for downloading from this site. That documentation, while not directly applicable to the latest version of BIAB, still gives a good idea of how BIAB works, and offers suggestions for the entry of data, and for the use of electronic timing systems with BIAB. For those who like to know how the more about applications, the v4.2.2 documentation remains worthwhile. The documentation files are not encrypted and can be downloaded by anyone who wishes to view the documentation that comes with the application. You will need Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader to use the documentation files. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat you can download the free Adobe Reader from the Adobe web site by clicking on the button below. The application files on this site have been encrypted, and, while you can download them, they require a password for the installer to work. Licensed users are provided the password, so that the latest version can be downloaded and installed at any time. If you have forgotten your password you can get it from your licensed Biathlon organization, or by contacting Graham Lindsay, as indicated above. The password required for v6 is different than the password that allows access to previous versions of BIAB. A Demonstration Version, with some limited features, is available. The Demonstration version is for those who would like to try out the functionality of the software before committing to a license. The Demonstration version contains all the functionality of the operational version except that it limits you to creating competitions of no more than 10 competitors, and you cannot create a working competition file for team competitions, such as Relay and Patrol competitions. Otherwise, it is a complete version that will show you all the functionality of BIAB, including the interface to electronic timing systems. The Demonstration version of BIAB is encrypted, and requires a password to install it. Contact the author, Graham Lindsay, by email, to request a password so that you can install the Demonstration version. Down-Loadable Software Read this Read_Me file for further instructions about downloading and using the files below.
On-Line Registration with Zone4 Biathlon-in-a-Box will now work in conjunction with Zone4 and its On-Line Registration Web site. You must use Zone4 to set up the registration parameters, and to download the registration data. You then use a special export command in Zone4 to save the registrant data to a transfer file. After you place that transfer file in the BIAB directory, you run the provided BIAB Script to import all the names of the Competitors, and to automatically register them in their chosen Competitions, as well as in any Concurrent Events that have been established for their Club/Division. The use of the Zone4 On-Line Registration with BIAB is described in the PDF document BIAB User Notes-Zone4 On-Line Registration, which you are free to download. Use this template file with Zone4 (version 6.8.4 or later) to facilitate using the Zone4 On-Line Registration with BIAB. The template file is also available from Zone4, and is included with each copy of BIAB that has the capability to use it (v6.0.5 or later). In order for the on-line registration to work, Zone4 must contain the exact same Competition names as have been set up in BIAB for the Event. When the competitors register, they must indicate their Club/Division name, using the same abbreviated Club/Division name that has been established in BIAB. It is up to you, as the BIAB operator, to ensure that the Competition names and the Club names are identical in both systems. To help with this process, I have established a standard list of Club/Division Names, with abbreviations. The list can be seen at anytime by clicking here. You can also duplicate this listing in your copy of BIAB by placing a file containing the club names and abbreviations in the BIAB folder/directory on your computer, and then running the provided BIAB Script to update the Club/Division Names and Abbreviations. The file that you need to download to update the Clubs/Divisions listed in your copy of BIAB is BIAB_Club_Update.zip Using BIAB with Electronic Target Systems You can use BIAB with certain electronic target systems, provided that you are using a radio-based network of Summit Timers. You do not need any additional software to access the data on these target systems, but you do need to have, on your computer, two available Serial Ports, since BIAB uses one serial port to 'talk' to the network of Summit Timers, and the second to 'talk' to the electronic target system. BIAB will work with either the Kurvinen KES system, such as the one installed in Canmore, or the HoRa 2000e system, such as the one installed in Whistler Olympic Park. |
